Ring Magazine #1 Pound for Pound boxer Manny Pacquiao will battle as Antonio Margarito at a catch weight in the Jr. middleweight division

Manny “Pac Man” Pacquiao                                                       Antonio “The Tijuana Tornado” Margarito

  • Pacquiao is coming off a 12 round unanimous decision over Joshua Clottey in March.  He has won 12 fights in a row, dating back to 2005.
  • Margarito is coming off a 10 round unanimous decision over Roberto Garcia in May.  Before that he was knocked out by Shane Mosley in which it was discovered before the fight that his gloves had been inserted with illegal knuckle pads.

This fight came together after the biggest fight in boxing, Manny Pacquiao versus Floyd Mayweather fell through for a second time.  Antonio Margarito, who is promoted by the same promoter as Pacquiao, Top Rank, was an easy choice as a replacement for the company.

Margarito was known as one of the most feared men in boxing until his unforgettable night against Mosley.  He was in everyone’s pound for pound list, and was coming off a huge knockout win over previous unbeaten Miguel Cotto.  The hand wrap scandal has put a huge question on Margarito’s past.  How long has he been fighting with illegal hand wraps?  That question will probably never be known, but Margarito can silence his critics with a win against Pacquiao.

Pacquiao is known as the “Mexican killer,” due to his tendency for knocking off Mexican fighters such as Oscar De La Hoya, Juan Manuel Marquez, Erik Morales, and Marco Antonio Barrera.  Margarito will be the biggest Mexican that the Filipino has entered the ring against.

Despite the size advantage for Margarito, who weighed in six pounds heavier, and could be fifteen pounds heavier on fight night, I don’t see Pacquiao having much trouble with him.  Margarito is an aggressive, come forward fighter, which plays right into the hands of Pacquiao.  Add to that the propensity to get hit and the speed at which Pacquiao’s shots will come, I see Margarito folding as he did against Mosley.  Margarito simply hasn’t been active enough, and hasn’t seen the speed of someone like Pacquiao.  This is going to give him fits.  I see Pacquiao stopping Margarito in the tenth round.  After which, he and trainer Freddie Roach will again call out Floyd Mayweather, and hopefully, for boxing’s sake, that mega fight will happen.

Here is the video of two of the biggest Asses in boxing, Antonio Margarito or Margacheato and Brandon Rios, making fun of Freddie Roach, who suffers from Parkinsons disease from his many ring wars.  Roach is the trainer of boxing great Manny Pacquiao.  Pacquiao and Margacheato square off on Saturday in Dallas at Cowboys stadium.  The mocking starts at the 2:05 mark.

1.  Colt McCoy will be the starting quarterback for the rest of the year, barring injury.  I know, I know, this is a gimee.  Bottom line is this, McCoy gives the Cleveland Browns a better chance to win on Sunday’s than either Jake Delhomme or Seneca Wallace.  No way I thought I would say this at the beginning of the season.  Plus, hopefully, the TV camera’s will show his wife on the screen some more:

All she needs is a kids sized McCoy Jersey!

2.  Despite the Cavaliers starting the season relatively well, they won’t win 40 games.  Look at the roster folks.  They just don’t have enough talented players to compete night in and night out in the NBA.  Outside of JJ and Andy, name me one other player that really jumps out at you…..I’m still waiting.

3.  Juan Manuel Lopez wouldn’t stand a chance against Rafael Marquez if they were both in their prime.  Lopez was able to stop Marquez last Saturday, but Marquez is an “old” 35 in boxing years.  He’s been in some wars, and he still was able to land some remarkable shots on Lopez, who is in his prime as I write this.  As good as Lopez is, Marquez was GREAT!

4.  The Ohio State football Buckeyes will be going to another BCS Bowl this season.  They have three games left, Penn State in C-Bus, at Iowa, and SCum in C-Bus.  Penn State doesn’t stand a chance.  Just not a good team this year.  The Hawkeyes will give the Bucks a game, but TP2 will be the difference, and SCum, well, let me think.  All I have to say is it’s been 2,545 days since that team has beaten my beloved Buckeyes.  ‘Nuff said.

5.  The Cleveland State Vikings will be a force to be reckoned with in the Horizon League this season.  I cannot wait to see this team in action come conference time.  Head Coach Gary Waters has an incredible basketball IQ, and when DeAundrey “I Hustle like Andy Varejao” Brown comes back from injury, the Vikings will have all five starters back from last seasons squad.

6.  Tobogganing and sledding at Progressive Field this winter with my kids will give me fonder memories then the Cleveland Indians did with their AAA brand of baseball.  It’s truly horrendous what has happened to my baseball team.  Damn you Larry Dolan.  Damn you.

7.  Jared Sullinger better watch his weight or he might end up like Robert “Tractor” Traylor.  Remember when “Tractor” was supposed to take over college basketball?  I do.  Then I saw this fat, sloppy looking dope on the court and thought, “what the hell is that?”  He looked like a black Pillsbury doughboy.  And I’m being nice to Mr. Pillsbury.

Is this how Sullinger wants to end up looking like?

8.  If you like pasta as much as I do, find an Italian and have them show you how to make real sauce.  Thanks to my brother-in-law, who has just enough “Pizon” left in him to know what he is doing in the kitchen; I will now be overweight for the rest of my life.  I really don’t care.  What can I say?  I LOVE to eat.

9.  Eric Mangini is a legit coach.  You don’t end up on Bill Belichick’s coaching staff by accident people.  As long as he can get NFL players to buy into his “team” coaching concepts, this guy will win.  He was unjustly fired by the Jets, and on Sunday, they will feel his wrath.

10.  Manny Pacquiao is going to dominate Antonio Margacheato on Saturday.  I don’t care how big Margacheato is, do people realize that he has done nothing in the last 24 months to justify him getting into the ring with the most explosive man in boxing?  The last time Margacheato was declared a winner against a legit opponent was in July of 2008, when he and his plaster loaded gloves knocked out Miguel Cotto.  Oh wait, allegedly plaster loaded gloves.  SMDH.

11.   The NBA is pure garbage, outside of a few big matchups, before March.  Don’t waste your time trying to figure out how teams are going to pan out right now, it simply isn’t worth it.  The teams that belong in the playoffs, will be in the playoffs, and the players will really start playing as the season wears down.

12.  Major League Baseball gives out gold gloves like the WBC gives out boxing belts.  This is not good news.  Derek Jeter a gold glover?  Really?  Really…..?

13.  Lionel Messi will turn you into a soccer fan if you give him a chance.  Trust me.

Ring Rating Update: Johnson earns super middleweight rating.

Chest bumping is an important aspect in the world of sports.  There are many factors that go into the perfect “chest bump.”  Above all else, however, it’s fun to do!!

The Cleveland Browns put a whipping on the NFL leading New England Patriots on Sunday by the final score of 34-14.  Browns offensive coordinator Brian Daboll had so much fun, he was inspired to do the chest bump with All-World left tackle Joe Thomas.  Watch the video below as Daboll shows perfect form and even mixes in a backwards summersault!

Kid’s, be carefull when attempting at home.

Two of the top ten featherweights will battle as Ring Magazine #2 rated Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez goes up against Ring Magazine #9 rated Rafael Marquez

Juan Manuel Lopez                                                                                        Rafael Marquez

29-0, 26 KO’s                                                                      VS.                              39-5, 35 KO’s

Weaknesses:                                                                                                           Weaknesses:

Stamina                                                                                                                          Been in ring wars

  • Lopez is coming off a 2nd round Knockout over Bernabe Concepcion in July.  16 of his last 17 fights have ended early.
  • Marquez is coming off a 3rd round knockout over Israel Vazquez in May.  That was the fourth and most likely last fight between those two warriors.

This fight has been talked about since it was agreed upon.  Lopez, who moved up from Jr. Featherweight two fights ago, is a bona fide star on the rise in the sport.  The main knock on Lopez is his chin, which has been questioned in his recent fights, but despite the knockdowns, he has shown the ability to get up from the canvas and finish strong, like his idol and fellow Puerto Rican great, Felix “Tito” Trinidad.  Lopez’s biggest scare came against Rogers Mtagwa last October, when he was in grave danger late in the fight.  It’s safe to say that if the days of 15 round fights were still here, Lopez would not have an unblemished record.  Marquez is an all time great warrior that proved he still had some gas left in his tank after his destruction of rival Israel Vazquez.  Before the first of his epic four fight showdown with Vazquez, he had gone over seven years without a loss and was among the pound for pound elite.  At 35 years old, Vazquez isn’t as fast, furious, and good as he once was, but he still has the experience and has been in against the best.

Despite both guys being in the top 10, I feel they are going in opposite directions.  Lopez up, Marquez down.  Lopez is the younger, stronger, and at this point hungrier fighter.  The ring wars that Marquez was in with Vazquez and his end result will suit him fine against opponents like Jose Mendoza, but when going up against a featherweight in the prime of his career, like Lopez, I don’t think it’s a good thing.  Fights like those shorten careers, and I’m not sure how much longer Marquez will be in the elite level that he has been for so long.  I think Marquez’s counterpunch ability will fluster Lopez a little in the beginning, but after the first three rounds, I think Lopez will begin to take over convincingly.  I see Lopez stopping Marquez in six rounds, setting up a huge showdown with Ring Magazine #3 featherweight and fellow unbeaten Yuriorkis Gamboa.

Here is a rundown of the biggest fights of the weekend.

Friday, October 15th

Buffalo Run Casino, Miami, Oklahoma (Showtime)

Heavyweights  – Former Light heavyweight Champion of the World, Antonio “Magic Man” Tarver won a 10 round unanimous decision over Nagy Aguilera with all three judges agreeing on 98-92 scorecards.

Tarver, who was coming off a 17 month layoff and fighting as a heavyweight for the first time in his career, had no trouble with the limited Aguilera.  He will continue to campaign at heavyweight and improved his record to 28-6.

  • Aguilera has now dropped three of his last four, as his record fell to 16-5.
  • Tarver may be able to beat limited heavyweights, but I find it hard to believe he will be able to compete with the top guys in the division, even though the division is limited.

Welterweights  – Cleveland/Akron Welterweight prospect “Showtime” Shawn Porter put a beating on Hector Muñoz, forcing his corner to convince referee in charge Gary Ritter to call a halt to the bout at 2:05 of the 9th round.

  • Porter didn’t score any knockdowns in the fight, but he was able to hit Muñoz with anything, at anytime during the fight.  He improved to 17-0, 13 KO’s.
  • Muñoz didn’t appear to be hurt during the fight, but did suffer to cuts due to accidental head butts that affected his vision as the blood was going into his eyes.  He’s winless in his last four fights and dropped to 18-4-1 overall.

  • I said going in that this fight was a mismatch, and clearly it was.  Muñoz would be better off getting more horrible looking prison tattoos than being a prizefighter, unless he’s just going into fights to collect a check and take beatings.

Fantasy Springs Casino, Indio, California (Telefutura)

Super Featherweights  – Eloy “The Prince” Perez won a hard fought majority decision over Dominic Salcido by the scores of 96-94 twice, and 95-95.

  • Perez used his jab to control the fight early on, and then was able to outbox Salcido late to win a fight that didn’t appear to be as close as the scored indicated.  He improved to 19-0-2.
  • Salcido didn’t do much at all early in the fight and when he started to engage with Perez, it was too little too late.  He’s dropped three of five and is now 18-3 overall.
  • Overall the fight was a dud, as the crowd booed throughout the fight.  Perez is lining himself up for a shot with Ring Magazine #2 rated Super Featherweight Ricky Burns.  There is no legit Super Featherweight World Champion.

Welterweights – Frankie Gomez won a six round unanimous decision over Ramon Montano by the scores of 60-54 twice and 58-56.

  • Gomez didn’t score any knockdowns in the fight, and went the distance for the first time in his career.  He upped his record to 7-0.
  • Montano has lost four of six, but has never been stopped in his career.  He serves as a good opponent for prospects that need to get rounds under their belt.  He is now 17-8-2.
  • Gomez is one of the bright young prospects in all of boxing, at just 18 years of age.  He’s already fought seven times, since turning pro seven months ago.

Bell Center, Montreal, Canada (ESPN3.com and ESPN)

Super Middleweights  – Ring Magazine #1 Super Middleweight Lucian “Le Tombeur” Bute knocked out Jesse Brinkley at 2:48 of the ninth round.

  • Bute scored three knockdowns, all via the uppercut.  The last one forced Binkley to concede that he had had enough.  It was the fourth straight knockout for Bute, who improved to 27-0, 22 KO’s.
  • Brinkley fared better than most thought he would, but still didn’t have the skill set to seriously compete with the #1 Super Middleweight in the World.  His nine fight winning streak ended as he fell to 35-6 overall.
  • With a fight between Bute and #2 rated Andre Ward still a while away, fans may have to settle for a fight between Bute and former World Middleweight Champion Kelly Pavlik, which is an excellent matchup.

Light Heavyweights  – Ring Magazine #6 Light Heavyweight Adrian “The Shark” Diaconu scored a ten round unanimous decision over Omar Sheika by the scores of 98-91, 98-92, and 97-92.

  • Diaconu survived a second round knockdown in his first fight in ten months.  He improved to 27-2 overall.
  • Sheika gave a valiant effort and it’s because of fights like this, which was an absolute war, that he is closer to 43 in terms of boxing age, then his true age of 33.
  • What a fight.  Incredible action throughout, with Skeika providing a much better showing that I expected.  Diaconu looked rusty, and he needs to continue to get in the ring, but he will need a little time off after this one.  Let’s just hope it’s not another ten month layoff.

Saturday, October 16th

02 World Arena, Hamburg, Germany (ESPN3.com and ESPN)

Heavyweights  – Ring Magazine #1 Heavyweight Vitali “Dr. Ironfist” Klitschko easily dominated Shannon Briggs en route to a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 120-107 twice, and 120-105.

  • Klitschko was dominant again, this time against the tough as nails Briggs.  He Improved to 41-2.
  • Briggs showed a granite chin and a huge heart as he refused to go down, despite taking an enormous beating.  His record is now 51-6-1.
  • I can’t believe this one didn’t end early, as the referee and corner for Briggs both acted carelessly as they let Briggs suffer way too many shots, which led to him having to be observed in a German hospital after the fight.  It’s really too bad that Vitali and Wladimir won’t fight each other.

Cruiserweights  – Ring Magazine #9 Cruiserweight Ola “Kryptonite” Afolabi won a ten round unanimous decision over Sandro Siproshvili by the scores of 100-90, 98-92, 97-93.

  • Afolabi had been out of action for ten months and it showed.  He improved to 15-2-3.
  • Siproshvili had a good showing despite the loss.  He fell to 24-7.
  • Afolabi needed a fight and he got one.  He’s scheduled to return to action in December in Germany against an opponent to be determined.

Silver Spurs Arena, Kissimmee, Florida (PPV)

Jr. Featherweights  – Ring Magazine #9 Jr. Featherweight Wilfredo “WV2” Vazquez Jr. stopped Ivan “Choko” Hernandez at :50 of the 11th round.

  • Vazquez Jr. put on a good performance and jumped on a still hurt Hernandez at the start of the 11th round forcing referee in charge Telis Assimenios to stop the bout.  It was the fifth straight knockout for Vazquez Jr., who improved to 20-0-1, 17 KO’s.
  • Hernandez was game in defeat, as he appeared to hurt Vazquez in the seventh round.  His record fell to 28-5-1.
  • Vazquez Jr. continues to impress, something that is hard to do as a son of an all time great.  He will have to go to Asia more than likely though, if he wants to become the legit World Champion of the division.

Estadio De Beisbol, Monterrey, Mexico (Fox Sports en Espanol)

Flyweights  – Ring Magazine #8 Flyweight Julio Cesar Miranda destroyed Michael Arango, knocking him out at 1:30 of the second round.

  • Over his last five wins, Miranda has scored five knockouts.  He improved his record to 34-5-1, 27 KO’s.
  • Arango was knocked out for the third time in his last five bouts.  He’s now 31-10-3.
  • This was just a stay busy fight for Miranda, who is looking to stay in the ratings and get another crack at Flyweight World Champion and pound for pound elite Pongsaklek Wonjongkam, whom he lost a decision to last April.

Olympic Sports Palace, Chekhov, Russia (No U.S. TV)

Heavyweights  – Ring Magazine #3 Heavyweight Alexander “Russian Vityaz” Povetkin knocked out Teke Oruh at 2:57 of the fifth round.

  • The knockout blow was a right hand from Povetkin, who scored his third straight knockout victory and improved to 20-0, 15 KO’s.
  • Oruh, who hasn’t won a fight since 2007, fell to 14-3-1.
  • Before this fight I didn’t understand what this type of fight would help Povetkin and his trainer, Teddy Atlas with, in terms of experience.  This was a joke of fight for someone with the elite skill set as Povetkin.
